The Yellow Wallpaper
The Yellow Wallpaper is an extraordinary and beautifully crafted short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman recounting a woman's breakdown after giving birth to her first child. It is taken from the writer's experience and written as a stream of consciousness. It shows the powerlessness of an intensively creative female prescribed a 'cure' of seclusion, exercise, food and no creative work, which drives her further into mental breakdown. This adaptation, by Fiona Ross, is for three voices to give theatrical licence to a many faceted rendition of perspective and aspects of the woman's fractured selves. Although the novel is of its social time, it resonates as a very contemporary, uncomfortable journey into the denial and fear of mental illness and the depths of suffering it entails.
